Salad, salad and more salads!

We LOVE our salads! Salad for lunch, dinner, “Salad for Breakfast!”

Cancer Fighting SaladOne of the main staples of my new “cancer-killer” diet is salads. Lots of them! (I can hear you groaning now at the thought of it) Yeah, me too. As you might have guessed, salad is not my favorite food. It used to be on my list of things to order before dinner but that is when I could load it up with blue cheese dressing and savory croutons. Those days are gone but I’ve learned to embrace the new and to help get me through I’ve repeated to myself every time I eat something I don’t like, “This is way better than chemo! Here’s to being alive and thriving!”

Here are some of the salads I’ve made over the past 7 months. This gives you an example of what I put on them. I’ve also started adding chicken recently. Made some last night in my new George Foreman. Sprinkled it with rosemary…

Healthy Cancer-Fighting Breakfast Smoothie

Smoothie Cancer-Fighting Breakfast Smoothie

What does one eat for breakfast when you are trying to combat cancer or simply trying to maintain your health? For me, it’s my go-to healthy, cancer-fighting smoothie. Packed with nutrition and protein this super smoothie is a great way to start the day.

I used to start my morning off with a cup of coffee and no breakfast. Once I arrived at work it would be another cup of coffee and an apple-fritter or a blueberry muffin. I know what you are thinking…What is wrong with a blueberry muffin and a cup of coffee?

a1  MORE THAN JUST WORDS

Matthew 5:33, “But let your communication be, Yea, yea: Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”

A person who has to swear or make a promise to validate his statements is a person whose word is no good. The thrust of Jesus’ teaching here is that we should live in such a manner that no one would ever have to have additional proof that we are telling the truth. Our word should be our bond.

We have all heard the story of the young shepherd boy who cried wolf when there was no wolf until finally no one believed him when the wolf really came. Our lack of integrity in performing our word has the same effect on people today.

Very few people conduct business anymore with their word and a handshake. Even contracts are not sacred if an individual can…

Energy Work: Does energy really flow through your hands?

Do you believe in healing by touch?…

I'M JUST GOING TO BE HONEST

I just had my first session of energy work performed on me yesterday by my yoga instructor that I really trust and have been practicing under for over a year and a half.  This was my question this morning: How the heck does energy really flow through your hands?

How does that work? I mean, part of me really understands it because I have experienced sort of magnetic-ish sensations when we’ve done energy work that’s been integrated into our yoga sessions (last time we did it, we focused on the heart and the root chakras, and that night I had the most amazing vivid sexual dreams, so much so I’m pretty certain I actually orgasmed while sleeping– I’ve never had anything like that happen before… you can bet your buttons I had a PHENOMENAL DAY after sleep like that!)

So I’m very VERY intrigued,  but it is all SOOO new to me and I want…

Broken People

Nevermore

Why do we protect each other from ourselves
When we are all broken and hurting?
Why do we not instead
Let others see who we really are?
How do we know that they will be hurt?
What if they find healing for their hurt
In the wounds we’ve been guarding them from?
What if they in turn show us their wounds
And we are able to heal together?
What if we are meant to find healing together?

Why don’t plus sized athletes lose weight?

FIT IS A FEMINIST ISSUE

Last week I wrote about plus sized athletes: Plus sized endurance athletes, we exist!

And at the end of my post I said the reader might be wondering why these runners/swimmers/cyclists are so big. Why don’t they lose weight?

This question comes in two different flavours:

First, the curious: How could they be that big after all that swimming/biking/cycling? Shouldn’t all that activity have resulted in weight loss?

Second, the normative: Why haven’t they tried to lose weight? Surely you’d be a faster swimmer/runner/cyclist if you dropped a few kilos?

In response to the first version, it’s amazing how much you can move your body and not lose weight. Tracy blogged too about this too when she wrote about the connection between endurance training and getting lean. (Hint: basketball won’t make you tall either.)

I was alternately amused/outraged when a staff person in the academic department where I work…

Sleep Scold Slackers

Americans are getting less and less sleep. Scientists say this is sleep that we cannot get back. Research this controversial discussion as some say two 30-minute naps ‘may’ suffice…

The National Sleep Foundation’s Expert Panel on Sleep Duration (let’s just call them the Supreme Court of Sleep) has ruled on the amount of rest you’re supposed to get and their ruling is an eye opener.

No, literally. You can have your eyes open more often now.

What?

The new chart identifies specific age groups and suggests a broader range of  sleep hours are “appropriate” based on your seniority.

I have to admit this is a disappointment.  I expect the National Sleep Foundation to caution, warn and scold me about my sleep habits.  In fact, I don’t even look at a report from any sleep expert unless I want to feel like a smoker – someone trapped in an unhealthy pattern of self-destructive behavior.

But reluctant  snoozers will notice with some relief how the recommended amount of down time has shifted:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range…
